At WIN Warehouse, we provide nonprofit organizations with essential, high-quality items that help them continue serving their communities. In this month’s success story, we’re highlighting the Wellston Loop Community Development Corporation (WLCDC). Here, you’ll learn all about this impressive nonprofit and how WIN Warehouse gives them access to the resources they need.
Their Mission
The Wellston Loop Community Development Corporation (WLCDC) is a nonprofit organization based in St. Louis, Missouri, dedicated to uplifting the Wellston Loop area through community engagement, resource sharing, harm reduction, and trauma-informed advocacy. They work to foster a physically, emotionally, and environmentally healthy community, emphasizing holistic development that prioritizes ethical standards and transparency.
Through various initiatives and partnerships, the organization supports local businesses, provides resources for residents, and enhances the overall quality of life in the neighborhood.
Affordable Housing
A key focus of WLCDC is affordable housing. By restoring and developing properties, they ensure families have access to safe, high-quality homes. Through revitalizing neglected buildings and reducing blight, the corporation improves living conditions and boosts neighborhood pride and stability.
Business Development Programs
Beyond housing, WLCDC drives economic empowerment through business development programs that support local entrepreneurs and small businesses. They offer mentorship, financial literacy workshops, and job training opportunities, equipping individuals with the skills and resources needed to excel in the workforce or successfully launch their own ventures. This holistic approach fosters a community that not only grows but thrives.
The Shelter Project
One of their most remarkable initiatives is The Shelter Project, which won the Social Impact category of The Architect’s Newspaper’s 2021 AN Best of Design Awards.
Saint Louis Story Stitchers Artists Collective documents St. Louis through art and word to promote understanding. Through The Shelter Project, they created a bus stop shelter and mural in the Wells Goodfellow neighborhood of St. Louis for WLCDC, driving public engagement and honest discourse on issues including gun violence, race, trauma, gangs, food insecurity, and addiction.
The shelter’s design combines the necessary shade and seating elements of a bus stop with:
- a cell phone charging station,
- community bulletin board,
- pantry to distribute common household goods to those in need,
- water collection system to capture rainwater for the adjacent garden, and
- solar panel to power the charging station and lights.
This project cultivates safety and support while strengthening community ties.
