African People’s Education & Defense Fund

At WIN Warehouse, we provide nonprofit organizations with essential, high-quality items that help them continue serving their communities. In this month’s success story, we’re highlighting the African People’s Education & Defense Fund (APEDF). Formed by Omali and Ona Zené Yeshitela in 1994, it is deeply rooted today in the communities of St. Louis, Missouri, St. Petersburg, Florida, Oakland, California, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!

Here, you’ll learn all about this impressive nonprofit and how WIN Warehouse gives them access to the products and resources they need.

Their Mission

The African People’s Education & Defense Fund’s mission is to defend the human and civil rights of the African community and address the disparities they face.

In St. Louis, they partnered with Black Star Industries (BSI) to form Black Power Blueprint, which aims to transform North St. Louis. Below is a list of their many programs and projects!

  • African Doula Project – a doula training program providing childbirth education.
  • Black Power Square – a small business center and retail complex that will be built from shipping containers.
  • Community Basketball Court – an outdoor basketball court for youth programs, adult pickup games, leagues, tournaments, and more.
  • One Africa! One Nation! Farmers Market – a farmers market that gives access to fresh, healthy food. It’s also home to the Gary Brooks Community Garden, where fresh vegetables are grown.
  • Uhuru Jiko Bakery and Cafe – a bakery, cafe, and commercial kitchen to serve as the headquarters for Uhuru Foods & Pies.
  • Uhuru Wa Kulea “Freedom to Nurture” Women’s Health Center – a project that provides prenatal, birthing, and post-natal care, among other forms of healthcare.
  • Workforce Program Housing – a renovated 4plex, which is a multi-family building with four distinct apartments, to be used as housing for their upcoming African Independence Workforce Program.

These programs and projects build power and self-determination in the hands of the African working class.
